TWENTY-SEVEN

Somewhere in the Arctic Ocean

The sickly-sweet smell of death and decay followed Emmett as he wound his way through the ship in search of the bridge. After a while, he became almost inured to the stench.

Almost.

Although he’d spent the last several years of his life living and working on the open sea, he’d never been on a vessel like this one. He knew such ships existed, of course. Occasionally, he would catch a glimpse of one on the horizon. The same polar melting that had opened the northern latitudes to his former employer had also made possible new and exotic tourism opportunities for those with the means and the interest.

Emmett turned the corner on the flight of stairs he’d been ascending and came to an abrupt stop. The next landing was bathed in natural light streaming in through a window in the stairwell door. After the last half hour spent fumbling around in the bowels of the ship, Emmett was more than ready to be able to see where he was going again. He took the remaining stairs two at a time and yanked open the door and lurched into the corridor beyond. A few meters to his right, the hallway opened into a bright, airy common area decorated with blonde wood, cream-colored carpet, and more brushed-steel accents than he could count. Plush seating abounded, scattered in small, intimate clusters. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls on the port and starboard sides of the space blurred the line between indoors and out.

He approached the starboard wall of glass and gazed at the sea beyond. The fog from earlier in the day had burned off, and the arctic sun was out in full force. A pair of triangular red and black flags stood stiff in a steady breeze.

An idea began to form.
